Alarippu Dance School celebrated their second annual Vijayadasami Day in Cupertino, CA on October 5, 2014. The excited students were anxiously waiting their turn as the parents were locating the best seats in the house. The Chinese Performing Arts Center in Cupertino, CA is the perfect location It has an intimate feel, while providing a vast stage with sophisticated stage lighting.

On Vijayadasami, people make an auspicious beginning of art and learning. Children who are to start their education are admitted in a school on Vijayadasami. People who also want to pursue the learning of any art and craft forms commence their studies on Vijayadasami. Vijayadasami forms an auspicious day to start any process of learning as it is dedicated to Goddess Saraswathi, the source of all knowledge.

As a teacher, Vijayadasami marks one the most important days in a given year. It gives the teacher an opportunity to showcase and honor her students and the students are able to recognize their teacher. As a teacher my goals are to help develop several qualities in my students while teaching them the complex art form of bharatanatyam. Discipline lies at the top of the list, as it is important for success in life. Bharatanatyam is a highly complex art form, which requires years of hard work. At Alarippu Dance School, the students will understand and embrace the concept of discipline and will be able to use the same discipline in other aspects of their lives. I will teach them the meaning of determination and persistence. The students will be given challenging lessons and pieces on a regular basis so they will have something to work towards. They will understand that hard work and determination will help them to succeed not only in the dance arena, but will also be able to take on any endeavor and succeed. Finally, I hope to instill a sense of confidence that will encourage them to be in the limelight and be confident with who they are. While teaching all of these concepts, I also hope to encourage the next generation to incorporate art in their lives. I believe a creative and artistic mind will open the children’s minds to encounter and embrace any situation with confidence and grace.

On this auspicious occasion, the students of Alarippu Dance School, made me very proud with their poise and grace on stage. They were able to exude the confidence that I had hoped to instill in them. I look forward to many more events such as these in the future.
